AESTHETICS AND ONTOLOGY of [ CRYPTO ] ART

Due to the decentralised nature of blockchain technology, NFT art has changed notions of authorship and ownership, has diminished the role of art world experts, and has influenced the global art market. The question of whether NFTs can be considered art at all remains open to debate. In order to distinguish NFTs from other digital and non-digital artworks, we have first explored what NFTs are and what kind of digital space they belong to. Secondly, we have analysed the conditions that an NFT must fulfil in order to be considered an artwork, according to its inherent characteristics. The results show that an NFT artwork depends on its artistic concept; secondly, its representational content has to be a visual interpretation of the NFT concept and must be related to data according to the concept; and finally, the concept defines the whole ecosystem and the aesthetic properties of NFT artworks.

OCC GEN ART

OCC GEN ART is created in crypto digital environment, as large-scale generative NFT series. OCC GEN ART is created according to the (artistic) Method of Complete Individualization (of Large Series), which is a form of the Method of Exception (OCC). As such, OCC GEN ART is closely related to OCC ART and the Method of Individuation, the other form of the Method of Exception. In OCC GEN ART, the occurrence of an event is a prerequisite for the creation of the artwork, while the artwork is inextricably related to the event.

The visual elements and the composition of the OCC GEN ART artwork symbolize data generated by the event occurrence in external physical time.

Q-PAINTING

OCC GEN ART involves a specific artistic-technological innovation, the q-painting. The q-painting is the artwork from which NFT art pieces are generated. The q-painting is a unique image – a variable image that contains numerous other non-variable images that are generated out of it as the representational contents of the individual NFTs in the series. Such NFT art pieces are NFT paintings - NFTs whose representational content is created as paintings by implementing the painting process in the digital environment.

ART & CRAFT

Artwork’s creative principle (logos) - that is, the artwork that is to be created according to it - fundamentally define and direct the craftsmanship. As craftsmanship always takes place within a specific artistic medium, the technical procedure must consider the characteristics of that environment. The craftsmanship of an OCC GEN ART artwork, as a crypto artwork, concerns the NFT as a whole — not only the creation of the representational content of the

NFT painting (visual elements and composition) but also the way the representational content is related to the data.

TEAM

When the artist and the philosopher engage as a collaborative pair, their dialogue on the ontology of art becomes both conceptually rich and experimentally grounded. As a team, they do not merely analyze the ontology of art—they co-construct it, revealing how theory and practice are inseparable in the ongoing effort to define what art is and can become.
